Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder

December 30, 2014

I used to think that this was just crap line used to make people feel better about themselves. However, in my ripe old age, I’ve come to realize that this saying is so very true.

When I first started wearing makeup, I never went anywhere without it. I would barely walk to the mailbox at the end of driveway without something on my face. I didn’t want anyone to see me without a full face of makeup. Then I got older, school got harder, sleep became more important, and I no longer cared. I also attended an all girls college so it wasn’t like I was trying to find Mr. Right in my 9 am class. I never wore makeup my junior and senior years of college unless I had a presentation or something to do after class. I just decided that I didn’t have anyone to impress and that sleeping 30 minutes was way more important.

I never wore bold lipsticks or smokey eyes or anything out of the box until about a year ago. I wore very light, natural, neutral makeup. I didn’t want to do anything to stand out, I just wanted to blend in. Once I started working in cosmetics and being surrounded by tons of beautiful shadows and lipsticks, I decided it was time to branch out a little bit. I bought MAC Candy Yum Yum after seeing one of my favorite fashion bloggers wear it, but it remained unused for a week or two. I loved it, but was still too scared to use it. Finally I decided to wear it and own it. I decided not to care what anyone else thought or would say. I bought it, I liked it, and it was on my lips so outside opinions didn’t matter.

That one MAC lipstick was all it took for me to adopt the “own it” attitude in all aspects of my life from makeup to clothes and everything else in between. I decided to just do what I want and not worry about what anyone else thought about it. It was like a weight was lifted and I had one less thing to think and worry about. I’ve loved experimenting with different eye shadows and eyeliners from bright blue to black. Makeup should be fun and used to express yourself and  your personality. We are all different so you do you!

Who knew one lipstick would change my whole perspective? Wear your bright lipstick, your dark eye shadows, and your bold eyeliner (preferably not at the same time) and OWN. IT. ALL.
