Mascara Primers

L’Oreal Double Extend, NYX Big & Loud Lash Primer, Lancome Cils Booster XL

Some people might think of mascara primers as an additional, unnecessary step. My thinking is if there’s a primer for something, I need to try it. Face primer, eye primer, lip primer, mascara primer, etc. I love it all. Primer=extended wear to me and I’m all about that. The 3 pictured above are the ones that I have and another one that I’ve tried and liked is the Merle Norman Lash Primer.

What does it do? It preps your lashes for mascara by making your lashes look thicker and longer. Who doesn’t want that?! Most primers are white, but once you layer mascara on top, you can’t see it. There are lots of options at Sephora and Ulta and some drugstore options too! Keep reading to get the details on the 3 that I currently have.

Up first is the L’Oreal Double Extend Mascara. This is a primer and mascara duo, but I don’t love the mascara so I just use the primer. I think it works ok, nothing outstanding, but a couple of bloggers I follow swear by this stuff. It’s white, like most primers, but after I put on my mascara, my lashes look gray. I have to add several coats of mascara to darken them.

I was so excited when NYX launched their Big & Loud Lash Primer. This is my favorite of the bunch. It has little fibers in it that really make my lashes look long and full. The downside is it’s a bit tricky to actually get the product on your lashes. Instead of applying it from root to tip, you kind of have to roll it over your lashes to evenly coat them. I roll it a few times and then go from root to tip before applying my mascara. I did an entire review on it here.

Finally, we have the Lancome Cils Booster XL. Mine is a small tube that was a 100 point perk from Sephora. I like this because you just need a few coats and you’re good to move onto mascara. It doesn’t take precise application like the NYX one. The price is a bit more than I typically spend on mascara, but this is something that I would buy the full size version of.

I don’t use primer every day because I’m too lazy for all that. Not that it takes long, but I’m normally doing my makeup in 5 minutes so I don’t have make time for extra steps.

P.S. Estee Lauder came out with a mascara primer that is black and I really want to try it. If you’ve tried it, let me know what you think!
