Best & Worst: Fair Skin Foundations

June 7, 2017

I’m starting a new series on L&L called Best & Worst. Over the next several weeks, I’m going to be sharing what I think are the best and worst products from each makeup category.

Up first is foundation. I meant to start with primer, but I forgot and scheduled this first so here we are.

I’m breaking this up a little beyond best and worst. I’m doing best and worst color matches and best and worst formulas. It’s hard AF to find a foundation that matches my pale self. I’ve tried so many different foundation and while some of them weren’t the best matches, the formulas weren’t bad.

Ohh I love this idea for a series! We definitely have a few of the same faves – and I have to say, the KVD lock it was a nightmare the first few times I used it…definitely took some experimenting. That is some heavy ish!!!

It sure is! I can only wear it if I mix it with a facial oil. Ain’t nobody got time for that every day haha

Have you tried Almay Smart Shade? I have a very light skin tone too & it’s been so much fun over the years to find something that works! But we all know that misery loves company, so to go along with my pale complexion, I have oily skin as well, good stuff!

I really like Almay Smart Shade in Light/Medium #200. It seems to match pretty well (at least nobody has told me that it doesn’t!) & it’s not too terrible on my oily skin. I also use the matching Almay Smart Shade Finishing Powder in Light/Medium #200. I have recently switched to the powder & I love it. Before, I mixed my own finishing powder, I would get a “Light”(which is usually too light) & a shade darker(which is too dark) & mix them together until I got a shade that worked.

My mother, whom I got this pale complexion from, has been mixing her foundations for years to get a shade that works for her. Of course that’s where I learned about mixing them to get the right shade.

Thanks for your input on this!

I haven’t tried that one, but I will check it out. I can mix foundations and make them work, but that’s too much some mornings when I’m in a hurry. I used to have super oily skin so I feel your pain.

I love this series! I definitely know it’s hard to find the right shade for pale skin. For some reason, I always like my foundation a tiny bit darker than my skin though. So far for me the worst color match is the Milani foundation, I have to wait until I self tan to wear it, and same with the L’Oréal Pro Matte!

I want to try the Milani foundation so bad, but the lightest shade is SO dark.

Curious, when you say best color matches, do you mean that those generally have a wider range in shades? Because if so, that’s great.
I’m also loving how the nyx total control drop (which I have yet to try) and the WnW Photofocus foundation is in both “best” lists. That’s a really good sign lol. Also, tarte appears to be in there a lot, so the brand must be really really good 🙂
And even though I only tried a sample, I do agree that the KVD Lock It foundation needs a better formula. Perhaps I’m being biased because I don’t typically use full coverage foundation, i generally like to keep it pretty natural looking,  but that foundation was thick af on me and it looked super cake no matter how little I tried to use. It also dried up my skin a lot. And I’m a little oily, so that says a lot lol.

By best color matches, I mean the best shades that match my very fair skin. I like full coverage, but the KVD is just too thick. I agree with you that it looks cakey no matter how you use it.
